Hardcore Nintendo Games

I’ve seen a lot of crazy monkeys swinging around message boards, throwing their poop at Nintendo for supposedly turning its back on hardcore gamers. Silly chimps! They really need to relax, eat a banana, and take a closer look at Nintendo’s game lineup from the launch of the Wii through the end of this year… (more…)

I’ve loved Nintendo’s Virtual Console idea from the moment that I first heard about it (every Nintendo classic on a single console? BEST! SYSTEM! EVER!) — but for whatever reason, I didn’t really get into the whole VC scene until a couple of weeks ago. Once I punched that ticket, though, I was on the classic game train BIG TIME. Full steam ahead!

So far I’ve re-beaten the original Zelda, Castlevania, Super Mario Bros., and Super Mario World, and I’m working through Zelda II, Punch-Out!, Super Mario 64, Super Castlevania IV, Kid Icarus, and Ninja Gaiden. A few thoughts have struck me during my trip back to the games of my youth… (more…)

At the risk of turning you away from this story immediately, I feel that I must warn you that — as far as Miyamoto stories go — this one is pretty unspectacular. But, what would a blog about my experiences in the games industry be without mentioning the time that I met my hero? Please do read on; I promise to keep it short. (more…)

What it was like at the Zelda: Twilight Princess unveiling June 12, 2007

Nintendo’s pre-E3 press conferences have always been the highlight of the entire show for me. Partly because of the big reveals of new games, and partly because the crowd of Nintendo’s nuttiest, most die-hardiest fans turn every event into a kind of Mario Woodstock. Nintendo fans often take a lot of flack on message boards for their unabashed enthusiasm, but in my book, there’s nothing at all wrong with something bringing a person so much joy that they simply have to shout “OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!” Hence, the unveiling of Twilight Princess is one of the coolest things I’ve ever been a part of.

Here, refresh your memory (man, I never get tired of this clip)…

Ooh, goosebumps!

What you can’t see in that video is just how big and full the room was. And the crowd noise was ten times louder in person! (more…)

My moments with Itagaki June 11, 2007

Tomonobu Itagaki is one of my favorite people in the games industry. Most hardcore gamers are probably familiar with the Team Ninja leader’s larger-than-life public persona — the badass rock star image, the outlandish interview quotes, the relentless attacks on his competitor’s games — but that’s not the Itagaki that I’ve gotten to know over several meetings. (I like that other guy too, though — what a funny and entertaining showman!)

In person, I’ve found Itagaki to be very approachable and easy going. Here are some of my favorite Itagaki memories… (more…)

Welcome to my little nook of the ‘net! Actually, you probably shouldn’t be here just yet, as I’m still in the process of creating this site and making it worth your visit. Sorry if you traveled all this way for nothing.

So, um…

Well, since you’re here already, I suppose I should think of something to say…

I’ve only just started to brainstorm what’s possible with this site. If I have anything potentially interesting to talk about, it’s probably because of my access within the video game industry. So, I’d like to share information and insight about recent games, and gaming-related news, that others might not have.

I’m also thinking that it might be fun to share my perspective on many video game events that I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of, some of which I consider to be major milestones in gaming history. I’ve collected some pretty good stories in my 18 years in the games biz (well, I think so, anyway).

So, please look forward to that… unless I never actually do any of it. Sorry, I’m still deciding! I promise that I’ll make up my mind soon.
